Essential GAF Roofing System Components for Your Home

Replacing a roof is not just about new shingles, it’s about installing a complete roofing system that will protect your most valued asset for years to come. But before you install the roof components, you’ll need to remove all of the old roofing , evaluate the roof deck for damage and make any repairs. Then you’ll need to install a leak barrier, which is a self-adhering waterproof membrane that helps protect the most vulnerable areas of the roof.

Next is Roof Deck Protection, which covers and helps protect against wind-driven rain that can blow underneath your shingles.

Then Starter strip shingles are installed at the eaves of your roof to help prevent your shingles from blowing off in high winds.

Now you’re ready to install quality asphalt shingles, which will not only help to protect your most home, but also beautify it for years to come. They are available in a wide array of colors to complement the taste of virtually any homeowner.

Next is a ridge vent, which is installed at the ridge, and works with eave vents to help remove damaging heat and moisture from your attic.

Finally, Ridge Cap Shingles are installed on the hip and ridge areas of your home, to help to protect against leaks and high winds at these vulnerable areas.

All these components are part of the GAF lifetime roofing system. GAF is North America’s largest roofing manufacturer and has been in the business for over 125 years.

What makes a window energy efficient?

When you are going to maximize your return on investment for your window project, you should know exactly what makes a window energy efficient. Among the main reasons we buy replacement windows if not the primary reason is to improve the energy efficiency of your current windows.

Anyone ought to realize that outdated drafty and badly insulated windows are costing you money each month on heating or cooling cost.

Unless you living in a climate which is 70 degrees year round you will benefit from brand-new energy efficient windows.

But hold on a second not all replacement windows are produced equal and simply buying new replacement windows without understanding just what features to request might be costly.

5 key things that matter to your window and door energy efficiency.

It’s not easy to decide which replacement window or door option is the right one for you. Certainly energy efficiency is key no matter what style you choose. But how can you make sure you ARE getting the most energy efficient windows or doors? Here are 5 key areas to look for that impact energy efficiency:

Print
1 – Quality Frame Materials
Various frame materials offer different benefits, such as strength, durability, and the ability to custom finish but how does it impact energy efficiency?
  • Aluminum windows are strong, but are not very energy efficient.
  • Wood windows can be custom finished to match your decor, but they aren’t very insulating.
  • PVC windows, like Sunrise windows, offer the best energy efficiency if they are filled with a polyurethane insulating foam. Without this foam, vinyl windows can be pretty inefficient. So make sure you ask about the type of insulation!
Sunrise windows are made from premium, pure virgin uPVC that helps keep your home insulated and is specially designed to be extremely strong and durable. The frames are filled with polyurethane insulating foam to give you the best protection from energy loss. Add to that the ability to custom paint the exterior of your windows and the full catalog of designer options, and Sunrise windows bring you the best of all worlds.

2 – Low-E Glass: extra protection
“Low-E” refers to a special coating that reflects infrared light, keeping heat inside your home in winter and shielding your home from the heat in summer. This coating also reflects damaging ultraviolet light, which helps protect interior furnishings from fading. Sunrise offers several low-e options to help you get the best protection no matter where you live.

3 – Multiple Panes: Insulate better
Two panes of glass, with an air- or gas-filled space in the middle, insulate much better than a single pane of glass. Some ENERGY STAR qualified windows include three panes for even greater energy efficiency. Sunrise offers both dual- and triple-pane options with a variety of low-e combinations that meet or exceed ENERGY STAR requirements.

4 – Gas Fill: better than air
Some energy-efficient windows have argon, krypton, or other gases between the panes. These odorless, colorless, non-toxic gases insulate better than regular air by reducing the conduction of heat in the space between the panes of glass. Sunrise windows are manufactured with a 90% argon or krypton gas fill, or come air-filled for high-altitude areas.

5 – Spacers: all are not created equal
A spacer keeps a window’s glass panes the correct distance apart and insulates pane edges, reducing heat transfer through the window. Spacers can come in many materials, from aluminum to stainless steel to foam. Besides insulating the panes, spacers need to be durable enough to handle the flex of the glass as it heats and cools throughout the day–all without losing the airtight seal.
Sunrise windows have a structurally sound, stainless-steel spacer with moisture-absorbing desiccant beads inside. This means that when tested under accelerated weather conditions, Sunrise glass systems outlast the competition.

5 Ways to Choose Sunrise Windows for Energy Action Month

In 2011, President Obama officially designated October as Energy Action Month in an effort to encourage Americans to save energy, water and money. This fall, you can take action by following these simple strategies to keep your home more comfortable and your utility costs lower during the cold winter months.
  • Maintain your heating system. Regular maintenance by a licensed HVAC professional is essential to ensure safe and efficient operation of your furnace. To avoid a breakdown when the weather is at its worst, schedule maintenance before cold weather arrives.
  • Adjust the temperature. Set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower for eight hours during the day and evening to save 5% to 15% a year on your heating bill. When you are asleep or out of the house, turn your thermostat down as low as is comfortable.
  • Find and seal up leaks. Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around house windows and doors. Look for gaps around pipes, vents and electrical outlets that go through the ceiling, wall or floor. These areas are notorious energy leakers and should also be sealed up.
  • Install energy-efficient windows. If you are planning to replace your windows, choosing ENERGY STAR®-rated windows can reduce your heating and cooling costs by up to 15%. Learn about the most energy-efficient windows manufactured by Sunrise® Windows & Doors.
  • Reduce heat loss from a fireplace. Up to 90% of the heat produced by a wood-burning fireplace is lost through the chimney. Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning, and be sure the damper seals properly. You can also add a heat exchanger, a device that captures some of the heat that goes up the chimney. If you never use your fireplace, plug and seal the chimney flue to further prevent heat loss.
  • Use the sun’s rays to your advantage. During winter daylight hours, fill rooms with sunlight to naturally warm your home. Leave curtains open on south-facing windows, and cover windows with insulated window coverings at night to retain heat and reduce draftiness.

Diamond Kitchen Cabinet Design Styles

Now's the time for inspired thinking. Diamond's diverse design styles will spark imagination and inspire your creative passion. Picture yourself in a rustic countryside home, or surrounded by the clean lines and symmetry of a contemporary kitchen.  Find the style that best suits you.

Contemporary Cabinets in Maple
Wide open spaces are easily handled with good design elements like a peninsula that separates a work area from a gathering spot. Accenting the room's natural architecture with the same surface as the countertop even adds a tiny bar area as a transition. And, just to prove that is room isn't all work and no play, amping up the contemporary cabinets with glass doors and open shelving adds a little bit of fun to a fantastic storage space.

Kitchen with Cherry Cabinets
Enjoy the modern vibe of this simple door style, along with the straightforward elements of unfettered design. Plenty of windows keep the space light and bright, while our popular Cattail finish keeps this kitchen with cherry cabinets anchored with creative warmth.

Maple Cabinets in a Medium Finish
Location, location, location. Known as a key phrase in real estate, it also more than applies to the way a kitchen is laid out. Minimizing steps with an efficient work triangle is certainly a timesaver, and the "U" shape of this space featuring Laureldale Maple cabinets ensures that traffic doesn't cross through the space. Another good call in this design is the raised placement of the microwave next to the refrigerator, making it convenient for quick reheat or defrosting.

Contemporary Kitchen Cabinets in Cherry
Perfect for parties, a long lean island is an ideal serving space. It also functions as the "great divide". That is, keeping guests out of your work space when you're working to get the party started! The warm wood tones of these contemporary kitchen cabinets partner with black counters for sophisticated style, and make the perfect play on the industrial architecture within the room.

Contemporary Black Kitchen Cabinets
Imagine a kitchen that matches your vibrant personality. One that features modern conveniences with a modern vibe as well. The workhorse island in this kitchen takes a turn showcasing your very favorite things, and is accented with aluminum doors and frosted glass. There is even a place to take care of the mundane, but the matching desk complementing the black kitchen cabinets makes sure that every task is accomplished with an element of fun.

Cabinet finishes and glazes

When choosing a cabinet design its important to know you have some exciting and fresh finish styles to choose from.  Find the inspiration you have been looking for with these five new finish and glaze options from Diamond Cabinetry.

Forest Floor - Our Shared Nature

Introducing Forest Floor, our forward-looking, full-hiding, neutral opaque now available in all Maple door styles. It yields an earthy, brown hue that complements our broader range of contemporary wood species and tones, and proves a rich alternative for those searching for a respite from black.

Thatch - A Swatch to Watch

Thatch is just another example of how we're always dreaming up new ways to make mixing and matching colors, grains and textures less time consuming and so much more fulfilling. Right in line with design forecasts calling for warm complements to cool neutrals, this versatile finish is specially formulated to enhance our existing opaques and stains. Available on Cherry, Hickory, Maple, and Oak door styles. Dream it and the ideas will come.

Henna - A "Red-y" Answer

In order to move forward with something new, sometimes you first have to step back — a really, really long way back. Such is the case with Henna. Born of plants; coveted by aesthetic aficionados as far back as ancient Egypt and now available on Cherry and Maple door styles. This rich brown finish features subtle red undertones and eagerly awaits the opportunity to take its rightful place within your modern color palette.

Storm on Cherry - Cool not Cold

How do we continue to make big splashes with our new finishes? Because we've made a habit of listening to our customers and learning. And from everything you've told us, our stone gray, semi-translucent stain — previously available only on Maple — has taken imaginations by, well, you know. Plus, with popular tastes continuing to align with the natural richness of Cherry, it only made sense to add Storm to your creative consideration set.

Wood Tone Glazes on Oak - Rustic Redo

Oak's durability and distinctive grain have made it a design classic through the years. More and more signs are pointing to the trend that Oak is on the comeback. To help you stay ahead of the curve, we're expanding some of our most popular glazes to increase your options for creating an ever-popular rustic look. Tells you where we think the smart money is going.

Kemper Cabinet Design Styles

Casual

Taking a modern base and blending it with traditional detailing, our Casual styling is a balance of relaxation and refinement. Helping you build a room that says “home” and “you” at the same time, Casual style is about the personalization of the space and finding harmony between all of the individual elements. This style allows for a mixture of ideas and shows an appreciation for freedom, non-conformity and self-expression.

Expect to see eclectic accessories like modern art next to a family heirloom, bold accent walls, and architectural elements from simple arches to ornate rosettes.

Contemporary

Walking a fine line between utilitarian and modern, Contemporary styling is all about open spaces and clean lines. Sparingly decorated with large scale, bold embellishments and usually dominated by more natural tones; Contemporary style relies on sleek, smooth and polished facades to create a modern level of elegance. When going for Contemporary, think streamlined, cultured and bold.

Expect to see natural materials like aluminum, leather, glass and stone, few but bold accessories, and subtle geometric design elements.

Rustic

Imagine a quaint country cottage where everything seems familiar and timeless. Rustic styling is built on the simple idea that everything in the room has been lived-in. At times raw and weathered, and at others softly distressed, this warm and relaxed style brings the charm of the outside in with natural materials, carved woods, heavy copper or iron and a hodge-podge of textures and embellishments that all come together to tell a uniquely long and rich story.

Expect to see decorations inspired by nature or personal memories, worn, country antiques, distressed edges and rough or faded paint, cyclical embellishments that bring the seasons inside, and a spectrum of colors that add pattern through texture.

Traditional

Elegant, inviting and reminiscent of a not-so-distant past, Traditional styling is best summed up as ornate, rich and decorative. Usually embodying the golden age of Europe, Traditional uses a variety of colors, elaborate motifs and a blend of materials to breathe new life into century-old styling. And although it can seem "busy," this style maintains order and refinement through symmetry and balance.

Expect to see many patterns and textures, gilded details, elaborate hardware, rich colors that complement one another, and a blend of curved, irregular and straight lines.

Pella Window Design Styles

Architect Series® Specialty Windows

Pella's Architect Series® product line offers seven additional window types featuring unique beauty and operation styles commonly found in fine homes around the world. These windows are available with many of the design options exclusive to the Architect Series line including Mahogany, Alder, Douglas Fir and Pine woods, virtually unlimited exterior cladding colors and grille patterns, wood exteriors and more.

French Casement Window
The French casement window has two sashes that crank out for twice the ventilation and an unobstructed view. Features Pella's fold-away casement cranks that won’t get in the way of room side window treatments. And one easy-to-reach handle on the sill locks both sashes securely.

Push Out Casement Window
The push out casement window opens easily with just the turn of a handle and a gentle push. It’s shown in the Traditional style, with a wide wood sash frame and historical stay that holds the window open as wide as you want.

Push Out French Casement Window
The push out French casement window has two sashes that swing open from the center quickly and smoothly with a gentle push, providing an unobstructed view. It features matching handles, traditional wide wood sash frames and historical stays that hold the window open as wide as you want.

In-Swing Casement Window
The in-swing casement window opens into your room, instead of out. Simply turn the handle and pull. It's ideal for places where a swing-out sash would get in the way, such as above a flower box or next to a walkway.

In-Swing French Casement Window
In-swing French casement windows feature two sashes that pull open into your room, instead of swinging out and into your outdoor space. Unlike standard 2-wide casement windows, this style provides a completely unobstructed view.

Tilt-Turn Window
Tilt-turn windows offer European styling and dual functionality. The sash opens two ways, giving you ventilation flexibility. Simply turn the handle 90 degrees to swing the window sash open into your room for a clear view and a full breeze.

Hopper Window
A hopper window is similar to an awning window, except that it vents at the top and opens into your room instead of out. It is usually placed above other doors and windows for extra light and ventilation.
